Saros is Housemarque's follow-up to Returnal, released April 30, 2026 on PS5. These 12 tips will help you survive your first runs on the hostile planet Carcosa.

Tip #1

Your Shield Is an Offensive Weapon

The Soltari Shield (hold R1) is the biggest gameplay shift from Returnal. Instead of dodging everything, absorb blue projectiles to charge your Power Weapon (L2). A fully charged Power Weapon deals massive burst damage. This turns combat into an aggressive push forward rather than a purely defensive retreat. [Source: Kotaku, VGC, GamesRadar previews]

Tip #2

Learn the Three Projectile Colors Immediately

Each projectile color demands a different response. Getting this wrong is the most common early mistake.

ColorEffectCorrect Response
BlueStandard enemy fireAbsorb with shield (R1) to build Power Weapon charge
RedShield-breakingDodge or parry (parry timing unlocked later)
YellowCorruption (reduces max health)Dodge at all costs. Cleansed by using Power Weapon

Tip #3

Unlock Second Chance First in the Armor Matrix

The Armor Matrix is Saros' permanent upgrade tree, fueled by Lucenite (common currency) and Halcyon (rare). Prioritize Second Chance -- it grants one free auto-revive per run. This single upgrade will save more runs than any other investment, especially for players learning boss patterns. [Source: Kotaku beginner guide, GosuGamers preview]

Tip #4

Spend Lucenite Before Every Run

You lose 50% of your unspent Lucenite on death. Never hoard it. Visit the Armor Matrix in The Passage hub between runs and invest everything you have. Permanent upgrades carry over forever, so every death genuinely makes you stronger. [Source: RadioTimes, Kotaku beginner guides]

Tip #5

Dodge Has No Cooldown - Use It Constantly

Arjun can dash (L1) infinitely with no stamina bar and no cooldown. The dodge also phases through most laser beams and enemy projectiles. In boss fights, you should be moving almost constantly. [Source: GameTruth combat guide, ShackNews control layout]

Tip #6

Don't Trigger Eclipse Too Early

Eclipse pedestals appear in each biome. Activating them makes enemies stronger and replaces standard projectiles with yellow corruption shots. Clear the biome first, charge your Power Weapon, then trigger it for better rewards. Entering unprepared will likely end your run. [Source: Kotaku, Polygon beginner guides]

Tip #7

Choose Halcyon Over Artifacts When Possible

When given a choice between a run-specific Artifact and Halcyon (the rare permanent upgrade material), always pick Halcyon. Permanent upgrades outvalue any single-run benefit. Halcyon is used for the most powerful Armor Matrix nodes. [Source: Kotaku beginner guide; inference about Halcyon value based on multiple guides' recommendations]

Tip #8

Use Carcosan Modifiers Freely

Unlocked after the second biome (or dying to the first boss), Carcosan Modifiers let you customize difficulty:

  • Protection Modifiers -- lower enemy damage, extend shield duration, easier reload timing
  • Trial Modifiers -- more aggressive enemies, weapon degradation, remove Second Chance

These effectively let you create your own difficulty level. There is no penalty for using Protection Modifiers. Use them freely while learning. [Source: Kotaku, Polygon modifier guides]

Tip #9

Clear Corruption Before Healing

Yellow bullets reduce your maximum health via corruption. If you heal while corrupted, you waste healing on the temporary portion. Use your Power Weapon to cleanse corruption first, then pick up healing items to refill the empty health slots. [Source: GameTruth combat guide, Gamer.org beginner tips]

Tip #10

Save Carcosan Keys for Late in a Run

Carcosan Keys unlock special chests. Your weapon's Proficiency level determines the quality of items inside. Save keys until just before a boss fight when your Proficiency is highest -- the payoff is significantly better. [Source: Kotaku beginner guide; inference based on standard roguelite chest mechanics confirmed in previews]

Tip #11

Auto-Targeting Is Your Friend

Most weapons in Saros feature auto-targeting -- hold fire and focus entirely on movement. Weapons without auto-targeting are marked with a red UI icon and offer higher damage in exchange for manual aim. For beginners, stick with auto-targeting weapons. [Source: GosuGamers preview, Gizmodo hands-on]

Tip #12

Explore Side Rooms (White Flags on Minimap)

White flags on your minimap mark alternate paths. These are typically low-danger rooms containing Lucenite, Artifacts, and Carcosan Keys. Clearing them before triggering Eclipse or engaging the boss gives you a much stronger position. [Source: Kotaku, RadioTimes beginner guides]
