Your base isn't cosmetic — it's a hidden stamina engine. A well-placed, well-decorated base can double your effective combat uptime through the Rested buff.
1. Where to Build

Don't build on the starting island. Explore first, then build near water AND clay deposits. Clay is found in dark muddy patches inland (not on beaches). Mine it with a Stone Pickaxe. A base near water gives you easy ship access; clay is essential for advanced crafting.
2. Build a Bonfire First
Your first build should always be a Bonfire (5 Wood). It grants the Rested buff which dramatically increases stamina regeneration speed. Without it, combat is brutally slow. Place it in a sheltered area near your storage.
3. Comfort Level Explained
Decorate your base with shells, chairs, rugs, wall hangings to increase Comfort level. Each decoration adds a small amount. At Comfort 10 you get ~17 minutes of boosted stamina. At Comfort 30+, over 30 minutes. Higher Comfort = longer Rested duration = faster stamina regen in combat.
4. Base Expansion Priority
- Bonfire — Rested buff (stamina regen)
- Storage chests — inventory fills fast
- Crafting stations — workbench, forge, etc.
- Wharf — ship repair and upgrades
- Comfort decorations — push Comfort past 10
5. Fast Travel Bells
Place a Fast Travel Bell at your base. Carry materials for a second one to place at dungeon entrances. This lets you teleport between key locations instantly — a massive time saver.
